It seems he had an episode of
sleep Apnea.
Sleep apnea is inability to breath while sleeping & results in chocking.
This can be due to obstruction in respiratory passage itself or due to instability in respiratory control at brain .

* consultation of an ENT doctor to diagnose & treat respiratory obstruction ( large tonsils, tongue/nasal septal deviations , allergies or
sinus problems ( here the
eosinophil counts help to diagnose )
* consultation of a
neurologist Are the steps to be taken for management..
Prevention can be by-
-losing weight.
- Avoiding alcohol, sleeping pills & smoking,
- Changing sleeping posture. Never sleep on back Sleeping on either of sides ( that suits you ) would help.
