What Causes Chest Discomfort While On Nitrofurantoin?

I am taking Nitrofurantoin for a urinary tract infection. I feel like I have a sharp pin sticking in my chest. The sharpness is in my sternum not my lungs. What should I do?It is affecting my breathing a little sort of slow and heavy. I have a ventolin inhaler that I have had to use when I ve had a cold or upper respiratory infection. It says use as needed. Will the Nitrofurantoin have any kind of interaction with the ventolin inhaler?

Hello and welcome to HCM.
Thanks for putting up your query over here.
I would like to know since when you are on nitrofurantoin and what respiratory problems you had in past?Is there history of smoking?
There is a chance that chest pain you are developing can be because of nitrofurantoin as an allergic reaction or pneumonitis.
To assess whether it is due to nitrofurantoin or not, your previous medical history and chest Xray needs to be compared with new chest X ray to be done now.
You need to get a chest XRay done.Further investigations, may be necessary depending on X ray findings.
If pneumonitis due to drug is found, the drug needs to be stopped.Corticosteroids needs to be given in decreasing doses under supervision.
I dont think ventolin inhaler will create any problem in this situation, but it is better to do any intervention under expert supervision.
Hope this information helps.
Thanks .
