What Causes Chest Congestion And Cough After Tooth Extraction?

I had two wisdom teeth extracted. 4 days later I developed a chest cold that I believe evolved into Bronchitis. About 4-5 days into this, after the tight feeling in my chest began to shift into a phlegmy cough, I coughed up blood. This was an episode that lasted for about 20 minutes. 4 days after that it has happened again. One important note is that my oral surgeon said there was one piece of root from one tooth that he could not get out without going under general anesthetic, but said it should work itself out . As the root works it s way out, could the blood clots be bursting and releasing the blood that is then swallowed and/or draining into my lungs as I sleep? No prior lung issues before this. Thank you.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Well, if a root was left unextracted then it does not work its way out or does not begin to come on the surface of the gum in just 4 days. It takes over a period of months to at times over years for the root piece to come to the surface. So, the symptoms are not probably due to root piece.
If you are coughing up blood you should consult in an emergency room and get evaluated and a chest X-ray can be done for confirmation and immediate treatment can be done.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Honey Arora
