What Causes Burning Sensation In The Nipples?

My husband is 33 years old and about 3 days ago he started having a burning sensation with some pain on both his nipples after his military workout. He has been working out for as long as he has been in the military and this has never happened before! Then we checked it today and now he has a few either small blisters or pimples. They were a bit of a white color before he took a shower, now it looks swollen and red. What can be causing this?
