What Causes Burning Sensation In The Knee?

HI, I fell pretty hard on my knee playing tennis, two weeks ago. I skinned my knee and it is recovering, however I have a continuous burning feeling in my knee now and it does not seem to be getting any better. Not sure what to do to help it? Could I have possibly fractured it? what causes the burning sensation? Thank you, Sara

Dear Sara,

As the skin of your knee has been abraded due to trauma, it may take some time to heal. The burning feeling might be due to keeping it too dry as the scab over the traumatized area may give the feeling of tightening in the area or it might be due to perspiration that can reach the traumatized area and the salts in the perspiration might cause the burning. If it happens that a scab forms as healing mechanism over the abraded skin and it is peeled off intentionally or accidentally before its maturation, it can also cause feelings of burning.

Try to keep the area open and do not cover it with clothes or make sure it is kept away from perspiration. You can apply Framycetin Sulphate (Soframycin) ointment over it to prevent infection in the area and to promote faster and infection free healing.

If you do not have edema or swelling and if you can do regular movements of the knee without any pain or disability, there is no fractured bone possibility.

I hope this information helps. Thank you for choosing HealthCareMagic. I wish you feel better soon.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
