What Causes Burning Sensation In The Chest After Taking Niacin?

Recently purchased Niacin 500mg...1st one taken today...within 20 minutes a burning sensation was felt in the chest area down to my gut. Drank a lot of ice water, typical daily routine...24oz x 5 over the day, then skin was warn and itchy. Used Aveda lotion on extremities...subsided and ate lunch....2.5 ozs of Salmon...warmth, itching went away. Looked in a Mirror - flushed face and neck...thought of going to Urgent Care...yet it went away. Checked Pulse..good....I should cut it down and eliminate. Thoughts??

Hello, Thanks for the query.
Niacin 500 mg does cause a number of side effects particularly when therapy is initiated. The symptoms noticed are headache, dizziness,
flushing (warmth, redness, or tingly feeling under your skin), itching,
dry skin, sweating, chills, muscle pain, leg cramps, sleep problems insomnia), blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, belching, gas. Therefore, it is better to take the drug at night tme to reduce the intensity of these side effects. These effects reduce over a period as the drug is better tolerated. Thanks.
