What Causes Burning Sensation And Red Bumps In Mouth?

I've had a burning sensation on my tongue for about 1.5 weeks and I dont know if I should visit my dentist or make a doctor appt. My tongue feels as though I've burned it but I havent. Its very sensitive to citrus, spicy foods and its hard to even taste the food. Its even difficult to brush because of the toothpaste, it feels like my tongue and mouth are burning. Also, at the same time the sensations started, I got small red bumps all over my mouth. Very small but visible very close up. Its almost like my lips are chapped. I used 1% hydrocortisone on my lips and that has made the bumps smaller but my tongue condition seems to be getting worse. What can it be? And who should I visit: doctor or dentist? Someone told me it could be an infection trying to get out of my body. Could that be true? Could it be a vitamin deficiency? What can it be related to?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern....

As per your complain you are suffering from APTHOUS STOMATITIS which is characterized by inflammation of mucous membranes and formation of apthous ulcers in mouth..
It is commonly due to deficiency of Vitamin B12 while it can be due to a large number of reasons although the exact cause is still unknown..
You need not to worry and can take a multivitamin tablet for one month..
Do warm saline gargles..
For pain you can take anti-inflammatory OTC painkiller like Ibuprofen..
Sucking ice pops and cold water rinses can relieve inflammation and pain..
Gargle with a numbing mouthwash to relieve pain during meals..
Avoid hot ,spicy and acidic food and take a soft bland diet..
In case if the condition does not resolve then the ultimate treatment is oral doses of steroids like Prednisone 10 mg twice a day..
You can apply a steroid based ointment as you are already doing for relief fom inflammation..

Hope this information helps..
