What Causes Burning Pain In The Epigastric Area While Treating Hypercholesterolemia?

Hi. To lower my Cholesterol I take Red Yeast Rice, Niacin and Omega 3 since several years. The Cholesterol stayed around 230 to 250. I started having heartburn about 6 months ago which increased and I halved the dosage of above. My Cholersterol went up to 330 and I doubled the dosage again. Since about a week I have stabbing burning pain in my epigastric area which is really bad and makes me double over. Is this maybe an ulcer? Elke

Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history and understood the concerns.
The heartburn for the last 6 months and now a stabbing pain with burning in the epigastrium is indeed indicative of something serious like stomach ulcer or so and the GERD causes the retrosternal burning that is heartburn.
Red Yeast Rice, Niacin and Omega 3 might have been helping to control your cholesterol to around 230-250 as it increased to 330 after reducing the same, but can cause the symptoms of burning pain.
I would advise you the following:
Stop Red yeast rice, niacin and Omega 3 immediately and get started with a PPI like Omeprazole, antacid and Domperidone.
Stop oily and spicy foods.
Take soft bland and small quantity diet frequently.
Control the stress and/or anxiety
Get an appointment for an Upper GI Endoscopy.
ANd ask for alternative medications for control of cholesterol.
Exercises do help to reduce cholesterol.
I find this answer helpful
