What Causes Brown Vaginal Discharge?

I am on birth control and supposed to be on my period this week. However, starting last week and ongoing until now, my vagina has been leaking a sort of brown discharge. One day I bled but now it s just back to the brown discharge. I am really concerned about what this might mean?

Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern. I have gone through your query and would like to offer some suggestions. Hormone imbalance leading irregular menstrual discharge is commonly seen during the initial months of hormone contraception. Once the body adjusts to the new hormone milieu, these disturbances disappear. However, such disturbances can appear anytime due to ovarian cyst formation, weight changes, abnormal liver profile etc. Brown discharge is suggestive of old bleeding and you may have experienced breakthrough bleeding. Please see a specialist for further help and also exclude pregnancy if things do not stabilize a week after your expected period. Hope this helps.
