What Causes Breathlessness Inspite Of Taking Cipro And Prednisone For Cough?

My mom and I just got back from Italy. She had a very severe cough. She saw a doc over there and 4 days ago went on cipro and a steroid, prednisone. They gave her an inhaler. She is having a hard time breathing and needed to get through the airport in Rome and London with a wheelchair. She is having a hard time breathing. Should she go to the ER? She is 79 years old

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Yes she should be seen as soon as possible.

The shortness of breath may indicate that she may have pneumonia or severe bronchitis that is not responding to her current treatment.

She may need alternative antibiotics and may also need oxygen therapy as well for at least a short period of time.

I hope this helps
