What Causes Breathing Difficulty While Sleeping?

For the past 3-4 for weeks my son (almost 13 years) gets up in the middle of the night unable to breathe. It has happened for about 8 times as of tonight. He turned a bit blue and makes loud noises in order to breath air, but then he falls back to sleep right after. I am very concern. What could this be?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your description of symptoms points to sleep apnea. I will advise you see the doctor for a complete medical evaluation and if needed, you may see a sleep specialist for further investigation.

In the meantime, I will advise the following:
• Regular physical exercises
• Sleep on side or abdomen rather than on the back

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mbuomboh Veranso
