What Causes Blood In Urine?

My husband has dark blood in his urine when he starts to wee, is having a little trouble getting it started but no other symptoms. The doctor has done a dipstick test and it confirmed blood, was a bit cloudy but nothing else. He s been referred urgently, does this mean he has cancer? He s nearly 43 and has been a non smoker for 11 years, otherwise healthy.
