What Causes Blood In Urine While On Treatment For Urinary Retention ?

My son has urinary retention - advised by ER on 2/10 and has a catheter, supposedly for one week. He says there is blood in the urine. He says the blood is not at the site where the catheter enters the penis. He is 23 years old; otherwise very healthy.

Should he be concerned about the blood?
