What Causes Blood In The Stool?

Hi, five and a half weeks ago I fell off a rubbermaid two step foot stool and landed on my tail bone on a ceramic tile floor, and then hit my whole back on the floor as well. The pain was quite severe, but exrays showed no fracture. Yesterday and today I passed stool with bloody mucous mixed in. I have food sensitivities, and also one year ago travelled to China. At the end of my trip I had one night of severe vomiting, and several days of diarhea. I have stool sample tests to do over the next few days. Could the mucous/ bleeding be from the fall? Are parasites a more likely cause? Screening blood work is normal, but B12 has dropped by 1/2. I am pale, tired, and don't have much appetite.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I don’t think this is related to your previous surgery.

In most cases, causes of abdominal pain and bleeding through rectum are benign and include hemorrhoids, anal fissure, or rectal polyps. These are primarily treated with stool softener, diet, and sitz baths. If there is no improvement in next few weeks, then surgical management should be considered. Other causes may be more serious and include tumors or inflammatory bowel diseases and these should be ruled out with colonoscopy which must be done if there is low blood count present or rapid weight loss. Otherwise, you can see if conservative therapy will help and consult proctologist if necessary.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein
