What Causes Blood In Stools?

My husband just learned that his bladder cancer will require that his bladder be removed. I don t want to worry him right now, but a few days after we learned the news, I had bright red blood in a bowel movement. My stomach has been nervous since this news, and I wonder if it just nerves that have caused the blood. Thank you for any information you may be able to give me.

Pathologist and Microbiologist 's  Response
Hello and welcome to HCM,
Blood in stools can appear in number of conditions most common being gastrointestinal tract (GIT) infection, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, mesenteric vein occlusion etc.
The appearance of blood in stools after hearing about your husband's surgery may be co-incidental.
The first thing to be done is stool examination because infection is the most common cause of blood in stools.
If ova or cyst are detected in stools, appropriate anti-microbial treatment can be taken.
If no ova/ cyst are detected, other possibilities have to be looked for.

Thanks and take care
