Hi there, I had unprotected sex at the end of July, took Levonelle less than 12 hours after. Began spotting 2 weeks later for a week and then had a period. Had a lighter period in September and October. However I feel really bloated and have breast tenderness. Took a few pregnancy tests and they were negative. Could I still be pregnant?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, Thank you for your query. I understand your concern. Levonelle is an emergency contraceptive & can prevent pregnancy when taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex.You had taken it within 12 hours .. so there was full protection against conception... & naturally there is no chance of pregnancy with the sex under query. Emergency contraceptives are known to cause irregularity in bleeding patterns due to hormonal imbalance caused by the pills. This can last for a couple of months. & the bloating & breast tenderness can also be due to same cause. You should start using some alternative method of contraception( barrier method ) till the periods are regular & start using IUD / oral pills with a doctor's advise after that. Thanks.
