What Causes Bleeding After Sex?

I have recently had sex and later that night I started bleeding. I took it to be the start of my period but am not sure since my periods are abnormal. I was wondering if I should be concerned? I am also wondering if it is okay to use a rampion even though I m not sure if it is my period?

Hallow Dear,

Post coital bleeding should never be taken lightly and treated at home by any domiciliary remedies unless diagnosed.

I would have appreciated had you provided me your age and any history of previous sexual exposure.

If this is your first sexual exposure, it is most likely that the bleeding is due to rupture of hymen (a fibromuscular septum at the opening of vagina). In that case, you do not have to worry. This is a normal phenomenon.

If you are form advanced age group, post coital bleeding points towards the possibility of cancer of the cervix (mouth of the uterus). If such incidence repeats, you have to take a Gynaecologists opinion. After clinical examination and Pap smear/biopsy as the indication may be, further advice will be offered to you.

Possibility of vaginal injury due to rough intercourse should be kept in mind. Bad injuries need surgical repair many a times. Per speculum examination of vagina will clarify the picture.

Bad erosion or infection of the cervix also can cause bleeding after intercourse. It can be treated by cauterization and/or antibiotics.

If you are sure, this is not due to rupture of the hymen since this is not your first intercourse, then you need to report to the Gynaecologist for thorough check up to diagnose the condition appropriately and treat accordingly.

I hope this helps you.
