What Causes Bleeding After Having Sex On The Last Day Of Period?

I have intersistial cystitis and I just ended my menses on 10/5. I had intercourse on 10/5 as well. After intercourse I still had some menstraul blood so I put a tampon in. After intercourse my IC flared up. Now 2 days later I still have blood on the toilet paper after I urinate. Its pink and I can not tell if its from urethra or vaginal. How can I tell?

Hello,

Thanks for writing to us. Followings are my comments:

1) Slight bleeding during or after intercourse may be due to partial hymen rupture, rough sex, blunt trauma or tissue injury, vaginal infection or dryness (lack of lubrication), hormonal imbalance etc.

Most of time, this type of bleeding stops automatically within 2-3 days without medical intervention.

2) Medicine like Tranexamic acid can be taken for 3 days to arrest bleeding temporarily. Use proper lubrication during sex.

3) Lastly, I suggest you to consult with gynecologist if bleeding continues more than 3 days. One ultrasound scan is advisable to detect uterine or cervical pathology like polyp or endometriosis etc. Do one pap smear test also.

Maintain genital hygiene properly. Wish your good health. Good luck.

OBGYN Dr. Nishikant Shrotri's  Response
Hallow Dear,

Though on the last day of the menses the bleeding appears to have stopped, there is some amount of trickle still inside the uterine cavity, which leaks off unknowingly slowly. The uterine lining is in a process of healing.

When you have intercourse on the last day of the menses, the small amount of blood collected in the uterine cavity gets expelled out. The uterus does contract during orgasm. Moreover, the uterine lining also gets disturbed causing some more bleeding. This bleeding will continue for few more days. When it is not visually perceivable, it will show as pink stains on tissue when you wipe.

In fact you should not have any intravaginal manipulation including sexual intercourse till you are completely dry lest the risk of infection and increased possibility of cancer.

I do not think there is anything to worry except that your IC has flared up for which you will have to report to your Gynaecologist. You may need a course of antibiotics.

I hope this helps you today.
