What Causes Black Stool While On Livogen For Low Haemoglobin Levels?

Sir, My wife has gone into regular test ,came to know hemoglobin is 6.30.went to hospilal and admitted for two days. Blood APC two units were given. Next day hemoglobin level tested it is 11.0.she has taken 10 days tablets as advised by doctor.one tablet name is livogen .morning and evening. Her stool colour is in black colour.is it normal.Pl advise.

Thanks for your query.
Noted the history and understood the concerns.
The main question is why should hemoglobin of your wife drop to 6.3. Was it due to blood loss through ulcer in stomach or so.
Hence it is imperative in cases of reduced hemoglobin to have an upper GI Endoscopy, colonoscopy and Ultrasonography of abdomen.
Tests of stool for three consecutive days from today and stopping iron preparations.
Blood tests for anemia typing and relevant other tests as advised on clinical examination of your wife.
If the tests as mentioned above normal then only we can think of Livogen or iron preparations to cause black colored stools , also called as malena.
Also give her Multivitamins, folic acid and iron as advised.
Pomegranate is the best source of naturally occurring iron that helps maintain good hemoglobin levels.
Treatment of the basic cause of all these problems gives the best long term results.
