What Causes Back Pain?

My husband is experiencing extreme back pain. He has been lying down, but when he tried to get up a little while ago, he almost passed out. He went white, so I made him lie back down. He started to sweat and became nauseous. Is this normal? What should I do? Do these symptoms warrant a trip to the ER?
