What Causes Asthma Attacks While On Methotrexate?

Hi I am a female in my 20 s and I have psoriatic arthritis and I have been on methotrexate for a year now, it works for the pain but I am constantly sick with colds and the flu which generally leads to a chest infection. I was also diagnose with asthma since starting methotrexate? Is this normal?

Hi and welcome to HCM
I'm Dr. Taimur and I will be addressing your health concerns.
I have read your question and understand your concern.
Methotrexate is a drug with potential immunosupressive effects that is its use decreases body's own defence against infections. your symptoms may be due to this effect of methotrexate but is not very likely. As you said you are already a diagnosed case of asthma so the likely possibility is that it is your asthma that is exacerbated with the spring season ( usually pollen allergic asthma). But to be on safe side my recommendation to you will be to visit a local doctor and get your checkup done along with base line blood counts to exclude any serious issue.
Meanwhile you should avoid the allergen you are allergic to, that is cover your mouth while getting up from bed in morning and also if near to flowers or garden etc.
Simple Paracetomol with local decongestant ( tab Arinac three times a day ) and an anti allergic tab Rigix 10 mg 1 at night) will be quite sufficient for now.
I hope this might be of some help, if you have any query feel free to ask me any time.
Thanks.
Dr. Taimur
