What Causes Appetite Loss And Mushy Looking Stool In An Infant?

Hi there, I have an 11 month old daughter who for the past month or so has been very fussy with food - eating very little some days. Her diet has been very limited to fruit & yoghurt but has improved over the past few days. Blood & urine tests done a couple of weeks ago revealed urinary infection & thyroid levels at the lower end of normal. I have only just found out about the urine infection, so she started AB s yesterday. She has always had a mushy looking stool but as of yesterday it became runnier & today it s watery & sort of bright yellow. Is the change in her bowel movements due to the infection or her diet? What are some of the symptoms of a urine infection? She hasn t appeared unwell besides the poor appetite. Should she normally have a firm stool?

Too many queries ... but I will try to answer them all in brief.

Urinary tract infection causes high fever with chills, pain in the stomach, vomiting, pain while passing urine, loss of appetite and sickness out of proportion to the visible signs of infection.

The loose stools may be due to the antibiotic that you are using - which one is it?

Normally, yes, all children should have a formed stool, which may not necessarily be firm, but it should not be runny either.

Please continue to give her an appropriate antibiotic so that she improves generally. That is the only way to restore her appetite.
