What Causes Anger Disorder After Bypass Surgery?

Hi, my grandad just had a 4x bypass surgery and he is showing some aggressive behaviour in the sense that he tried to get out of bed (although with all the machines on him) and he just looks generally nervous. He mostly sleeps because they put him on tranquillisers and they tied his hand to the bed because he tried to pull them off. He performed surgery 3 days ago. He is 73 and has an impressive healthy life style, eating habits and regimen. Thank you.

Hello!

Thank you for asking on HCM!

I understand your concern, and would like to explain that the situation, your grandad is experiencing is called "cognitive disorders". That situation is seen not infrequently after complex medical procedures, especially after cardiac surgery.

There are many factors that impose such a behavior during surgery, such as advanced age, prolonged extra-corporeal circulation, potential acid-base disorders, multiple monitoring and intervening machines and other equipments that produce excessive stress on the patient, many i/v lines, catheters, tubes, etc, attached to the patient, etc.

I would like to explain that these symptoms are generally transient. So don't worry!

Everything will be fine after a couple of days. You just need to talk to his doctor for more current information about the daily clinical status.

Hope to have been helpful to you. Greetings! Dr. Iliri
