What Causes An Ectopic Pregnancy?

Hi, I am currently on the Mirena IUD I ve had for a year now, and for the first time I started spotting here and there, headaches, nausea, and also period like cramping. I was reading online that there has been cases where women end up pregnant with the IUD, especially Ethiopic pregnancies? Or maybe these symptoms are side effects? I have not taken any pregnancy test, should I? I hope you can answer my questions.

Hi,
I understand your concern.
* Being a hormone inbuilt IUD- the symptoms can be due to side effects of the device.
* the mechanism of action in Mirena IUD is ,
- increasing thick cervical mucus -thus not allowing entry of sperms in uterus,
- Not allowing implantation of fertilized ovum in uterine cavity by mechanical barrier/ thinning inner layer of uterus.
It does not have any action to stop ovulation, so accidental entry of sperm in uterus & fertilization is possible very rarely.& the implantation takes place out side uterus- when it is in tubes -- it is tubal pregnancy.
Thus tubal pregnancy is rare condition observed in Mirena users.
* If you doubt/ fear of having tubal pregnancy,it's worth doing blood HCG test to exclude it/ consulting a gynecologist for physical examination & investigations.
Thanks.
Thanks.
