What Causes Abdominal Cramps After Taking Vitamin D Supplement?

My MD put me on vitamin D prescription of 50000UNI CAP. Generic name Ergocalciferol Capsules. I am to take 2 per week for 11 weeks. I started the first one on Wed. Night. On Friday morning I started having mild cramps like caused from menstration. But I am 61 and stopped having my period 6 years ago. I had some very light bleeding, more like spotting only notice one or twice during the day and cramps off and on all day. Had a Pap smear this past March which was fine. Is the starting the vitamin D in any way the problem? Or should I see my OBGYN? e- mail address is YYYY@YYYY

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The vitamin D would not have induced the bleeding that you experienced and it would be best for her to be seen by a doctor.

Bleeding after menopause is called post menopausal bleeding and though it can be related to benign causes, more serious causes need to be ruled out.

Your doctor may suggest an ultrasound of the pelvis to take a look at the uterus and depending on the findings , a biopsy may need to be done as well.

The pap smear would take a look at the cervix but would not assess the uterus.

I hope this helps
