What Causes Abdominal Bloating?

My abdomen is bloated everyday, usually when I wake up it seems to be fine, as the day progresses it gets uncomfortable, and distended (bloated) I look like I m 5 months pregnant. I eat 5 to 6 small meals a day consisting of 4 oz protein, 30z of a carb usually sweet potato or brown rice and 1 cup spinach. I eat eggs for breakfast with 1/3 cup oatmeal. I do have a umbilical hernia from my last pregnancy, but no pain. just uncomfortable all day due to bloating. I m an active woman gym daily but it makes it hard for me to get on a treadmill when I feel the way I do! HELP

Hi my dear,

I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concern.

You mention to be bloated everyday although you have small meals (5 or 6 meals/day) with limited carb foods. You also mention a personal history of umbilical hernia but with no pain while being very active.

Now, feeling bloated although the diet changes is suggestive for a possible problem with your gastrointestinal (GI) tract.

As this is happening everyday, I think it's time to get some tests in order to determine the right diagnosis:
- abdominal ultrasound to evaluate the hernia and other GI organs
- lactose intolerance test
- fecal analysis and culture to rule out candida overgrowth

Until you get the tests done, I highly recommend to add probiotics to your everyday diet to stabilize intestinal flora. Avoid drinking fluids with straw or avoid all foods that would increase bloating (e.g. beans, cauliflower, broccoli, dairy, etc.).
Take simethicone with carbone to ease the bloating.

Hope this helps.
