What Causes A Sudden Onset Of Facial And Neck Pain With Itchy Ears?

Hi, About four months ago I started to have facial pain, neck pain, jaw pain, pain around my rear upper teeth area and extremely itchy ears (all primarily on the left side). I went to the dentist who reported no sign of oral infection and suggested it may be TMJ and referred my to an oral surgeon. The oral surgeon didn t take x-rays but concluded I may be clenching my teeth at night causing the soreness and prescribed me a muscle relaxer, Flexerol. I took that for about a month or so but it wasn t doing much at all so I went to my PC. He knows of my history of anxiety and suggested I may have pulled a muscle on the left side of the back of my upper neck near my skull. The muscle (or that area) was (and still is) very tender, painful and slightly swollen. He prescribed a weeks worth of low strength Valium. Again, like the muscle relaxer before, it relaxed me slightly but the symptoms still persisted after the Valium was up. He also look in my ears and said my ear drums were slightly retracted and there was a broken blood vessel on my left one but not to worry. Well, I still have an itchy ear and throat, facial muscle cramping and pressure, very bad neck pain, jaw pain, ear pain, and a general spread of pain from the top of my head down to my left shoulder. But the pain seems to be centered around the area of that muscle where it meets the skull on my left side behind my ear. I m a worry-wart so I do a lot of online research, which can be both good and bad. I m starting to think I may have Mastoiditis. That s the exact area the pain seems to radiate from. I m going to go to the ER this week. I know that s a brief explanation of my symptoms and you never met me but does it sound like I m on the right track in thinking it s Mastoiditis? Especially with the elimination of other possible things over the past few months by doctors and dentists. I m a 33 year old male, 190 pounds and generally healthy otherwise. Like I said, I m going to go to the ER this week. I would go NOW but I m so busy with work and New Years. IS there anything I should mention when I go to the ER? Any clarity (and comforting and reassuring advice) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and Happy New Year!

Well only way to rule that out would be to do a CT scan, as X-rays and MRI would be inconclusive. Persistent pain after medication is definitely a concern. You also mention of a tender muscle, it could also MPDS.
