What Causes A Strange Sensation In The Sternum Area?

I get a strange sensation in my left chest closer to my sternum sort of like somebody poking with their thumb me there. It kind of comes and goes. I was a smoker so I m thinking its in my lungs. I have had a bit of congestion as of late so it may be related.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and welcome to HCM.
Thanks for putting your query over here.
Abnormal sensation in sternal area with history of being chronic smoker may point to coronary artery disease, chronic bronchitis, gastritis or malignant changes in lung/oesophagus.
If I were your treating doctor ,I recommend,
-Steam inhalation to relieve yourself of chest congestion.
-If there is burning sensation in chest with nausea, cap omeprazole once in morning may be taken.
-Avoid smoking. If you want can take help of psychiatrist.
-certain investigations like Chest xray,ECG,blood glucose ,blood lipids, blood coagulation factors studies are necessary.
Further specific investigations and treatment will depend on results of these basic tests.
Hope this information helps.
Thanks.
