What Causes A Spot Behind The Tongue With Recurring Cough Suggestive Of?

I am a 60 year old female. I have had a spot on the back of my tongue that has bothered for about six years. It has started to bother me more and I recently saw my ENT again. He said I have large tonsils and the lingual tonsil is large. I feel it all the time and it feels like I need to cough something up. I also have trouble getting small pieces of food stuck. He said he thought it was from allergies, drainage and reflux. He will remove my tonsils if I want and biopsy the back of the tongue. Would you recommend it? This problem is always on my mind. There isn t any pain with it. Not knowing for sure what it is, is a constant worry.

Hi Dear,

Understanding your concern.

As per your query you have symptoms of spot on the back of the tongue with recurring cough symptoms you mention in query are pointing towards a condition known as pharyngitis i.e inflammation of the pharynx that is the back of the throat. and it could be due to enlargement of lingual tonsils.

I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist for proper examination. Doctor may order blood test , throat culture or X-ray of upper respiratory tract. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics (penicillin or amoxicillin) along with anti inflammatory medications. If it is enlarged tonsils and really troubling you then you can go for removal of tonsils. Till then do warm saline gargles. Maintain complete hygiene and avoid intake of sharp and spicy food.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
