What Causes A Patch Of Hair On The Buttocks In A Child?
Hello, One of my twin 2 year old daughters has had a patch of hair on her butt since birth. Our pediatrician said this usually goes away, but I have a feeling it won't. She has a mongolian birth spot also on her backside. Any idea what causes the hair growth. I'd like to get it removed, any suggestions or concerns?

Hi, Mongolian spots are a normal physiological darkened spots seen in neonates at birth usually around chest , lower back and on the butts. They dont require any treatment and fade away on their own. Tuft of hair on the butts have no significance apart from cosmetic looks unless they are present near the midline close to spine. Their it can be associated with Occult Spina Bifida. This condition is serious and requires an MRI spine and brain to rule out any abnormality. Also an Xray Spine is required. If your child has hair in midline and close to spine, I suggest you get an MRI and Xray done to rule out any congenital develoment disorder or Neural tube defects. Thanks and regards.
