What Causes A Painful Bump On The Shin?

I run for exercise regularly. I have a somewhat painful bump that has started to surface right below my left knee on the front of my shin. When I am rested and inactive for a day or so it goes away but as soon as I run again it resurfaces and is not painful to the touch, but painful when I move. What could it be?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for asking at HCM.

By what you explain it is very likely it is a cyst that fills with liquid.
1. We have bursa (cyst like structures) that fill with the joint liquid around the knee and sometimes it might get palpable, is generally not painful but might get tender when we exercise as more fluid goes in the cyst when we use the joint. this is the reason it gets smaller when you do not use your knee a lot.
2. Another cause might be if you are hurting muscle fibers while exercising.

They are both not dangerous. The bursa around the knee tends to be recurent and mostly is treated by treating knee problems. If you are 45 years old and above you might be at risk of ostheoarthritis and this predisposes for the bursa around the knee to be filled with water.

I would suggest you to see your doctor for more information and need for evaluation.

Hope this is helpful and answers to your question

Best regards,
