Hello I have what an urgent care dr called anal skin tags. One is very painful today and larger than yesterday when I saw the dr. I had a hemroid about a year ago in the same spot this larger painful tag has appeared. I was told to go to a dermatologist. Is that the correct place to go for examination and possible removal?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
HI, I understand your concern. Anal external hemorrhoid tends to recur following change in bowek habit ( constipation). You need to take treatment for relief of the pain & swelling of the lesion first. it will include- - avoid constipation/ take mild purgative / pain killers over the counter help in removing the inflammation & pain./ A schitz's bath ( sitting in a tub of warm water to foment the area.) twice a day followed by application of ointment (annovate ) will help. Dermatologist will not help in this condition. You should consult a anorectal surgeon. He will examine you with a rectoscope- to visualize internal hemorrhoids/ anal warts to diagnose the exact cause. Treatment will depend on cause. It can be medicines by a doctor's prescription./ surgery. Thanks.
