What Causes A Lump On The Toe Along With Joint Pain?

My 12 yo son has mild joint pain in his big toe, with a bump on that joint. His big toe constantly pops, quite loudly and everytime he moves his big toe. His pedatrician came up with a diagnosis of a contusion but this has been on going for several years, although the pain is not worsening, his joint seems to be getting bigger and the popping is a new symptom. What could be going on??

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi.

Get an X-ray conducted, and based only on the X-ray film a diagnosis can be suspected, or further blood evaluation can be ordered to establish a diagnosis and accordingly reach a conclusion; without these, a diagnosis made is a shot in the dark.

Best wishes.
