A heart murmur is when one or more valves in the heart do not open and close properly. This does not mean there is something seriously wrong with the heart. A lot of women have mitral valve prolapse. This is fairly common and you don't need to do anything about it. They will have you take antibiotics before any dental or medical procedure to prevent an inflammation of the heart. If you have a valve this is not functioning properly, that needs to be treated. Your doctor should send you to cardiologist if he thinks anything is wrong with the heart. You can ask for a referral just for your own peace of mind, but most heart murmurs are not a problem.
