What Causes A Fluctuant Mass Above The Mastoid Process In A Child?

I have a 13 month old. We noticed a few months ago that she had bilateral, fluctuant, hard masses subcutaneously above her mastoid processes. The one on the right side is now larger (almost like a knot that you would get if you have been hit with another object; or a bad bump to the head). My husband and I are trying very hard not to freak out. She seems to be in good spirits and her normal self. Her pediatricians have not made mention of this, but after noticing that there seems to be one thats enlarging, a pediatric visit is in order today. Is this normal? Should a catscan or MRI be done? Thanks

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi welcome to Hcm forum,
Its sounds like a lymph node which is normally seen secondary to infection around the area. So your child might have had some infection in the ear, throat or head and it doesn't sound like an alarming thing just now. However, its best judged after seeing and assessing it with naked eye and after examining. So your doc needs to be seen whenever next possible. Hope your query is answered completely. Take care.
