What Can Be Done To Increase Vitamin D Levels?

hello I have severely low vitamin d deficiency. I have been on 5000 units vit. d12 for several months now and my blood tests show no improvement and I seem to be feeling worse physically (tired, joint pain, no energy, sleeplessness etc.) instead of better. what things can I do to try and get my vitamin d levels up again on my own seeing that the medication isn t working?

Welcome to HCM, Are you vegetarian? Do you have any type of bowel disease or pernicious anemia? There may be a problem with the absorption capacity of your terminal ileum of your small intestinal track. You should have noticed an improvement if you have been takin 5,000 IU Vitamin D3.

Ask your doctor to switch you to the injections. At the same time you should have had your folic acid tested. Treating B12 without running a lab on folic acid can mask a folic acid deficiency.

I hope I have provided some guidance and answered you question. Kathryn Shattler, MS,RDN
