What Are The Symptoms Of Genital Herpes?

My daughter had unprotected sex with a person who had oral herpes. We do not know if he had genital herpes. She is being tested for both types. If her tests come up negative for oral herpes, should she still get tested for genital herpes and what is the waiting period for all of her test results. We read online that it is 12-16 weeks.

Hello. Thank you for writing to us at healthcaremagic

Herpes is transmitted by intimate/ direct contact with an infected sexual partner.
There are two types of Hsv (type 1 &2) and either type can cause Oral as well as Genital herpes.
Commonly utilized tests for herpes detects circulating antibodies against Hsv virus. The antigens utilized for this test is common to both Hsv type 1 and Hsv Type 2 and therefore routine test is not able to give type specific results.
Hsv type specific tests are available but even they would not be able to tell us for sure whether she has Oral herpes or genital herpes unless she develops a clinical episode of either Oral or Genital herpes because either type can cause oral as well as genital herpes.
The earliest our bodies start producing circulating antibodies against the virus is 7-14 days after infection when they can be picked up with this test.
