What Are The Symptomms Of HIV-1?

A friend of mine is a pediatrician and was consulting a HIV-1 positive child. The needle used to inject the child, after lying several minutes in the open air, accidently fell on my friend's leg, resulting in injury where a little blood came out.She squeezed the blood out and treated it with disinfectants. She started after a week with PEP,but discontinued after 5 days of heavy discomfort. Now,around 4 months later, her HIV-1 TRI-DOT test came positive.IS my friend HIV-1 positive?Could this be a mistake? Can TRIDOT tests be inaccurate? What tests should she do to confirm this?

Hi
Hiv diagnosis is done with screening followed by confirmatory test.
Screening tests detects antibodies in serum.
It will take 6-8 weeks to appear antibodies in the blood.
Tests done before in this window period may be falsely negative even if the person have HIV infection.
False positive results are also possible, but with triple test, chances are less.
If initial screening is positive, you should do a repeat test ( same test).
If it is negative, the first one may be a false positive.
If again positive, then you should proceed for confirmatory test.
Usually confirmatory test used are western blot test.
If it is positive, then HIV infection is confirmed.

Remember , HIV is no longer a lethal disease as considered in the past.
We have a good number of HIV drugs used in highly active anti retroviral treatment
On HAART patients can have a near normal life as that of a HIV negative , and life expectancy is also same as that of HIV negatives.

There is nothing to worry much,
Occupational hazards are even though rare, that can occur as a part of profession, which are inevitable, and we should always think positive.

Proceed with further testings
Best of luck

Thank you
