Almost all the bones are present in the foetus before birth. A series of changes called ossification starts in every bone which means that the soft cartilagenous structures start calcifying with the deposition of calcium phosphate and become bone. This is why in the X-rays, at various ages you will see a new bone/part of bone appearing.
