Hello,
swollen legs and ankles after starting (or later)
amlodipine (the active ingredient of
norvasc) happens in some patients, particularly women that take the highest dose (10mg). I've never read about hair loss but I cannot exclude it if her problem coincides with treatment initiation.
A crucial bit of information is whether she had swollen legs before norvasc or not. If she did then she needs an assessment for the cause which could be heart problems,
kidney malfunction, vein problems etc
If norvasc is the cause then there are some ways to try to attenuate its swelling effects.
Possible solutions include:
- taking it before bedtime
- reducing the dose
- taking
lasix as your doctor prescribed
- taking an angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEi) (if there are no contraindications against it)
Since she's diabetic she would likely benefit from the administration of an ACEi or an
angiotensin receptor blocker anyway. If she doesn't take one of them already then perhaps you should ask your doctor - who is aware of her medical history - if she could.
Cramps in patients taking lasix can sometimes be caused by electrolyte disorders. She should be tested for sodium, potassium and
magnesium as soon as possible.
In my patients that - for any reason - cannot be immediately tested, I usually advice them to consume potassium containing foods like bananas, tomatoes etc or even take a small dose of potassium supplements provided they don't have
chronic renal failure or other conditions that may increase potassium levels. I don't know her complete medical history, so I could not give her the same advice.
I hope I've given you some idea about her situation.
If you still have questions on the subject, I'll be glad to clarify it further for you. Just ask!
And if you're satisfied with my answer then please send a "thanks"!
Kind Regards!
