Appendix plays a major role in herbivores but does not play any significant role in human digestion. An acute appendicitis is treated by surgical excision. However if the appendix bursts the surgeons might wait for infection to get controlled with antibiotics for 6-8weeks and then appendicectomy is done known as interval appendicectomy.
