Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, My 18 year old daughter was recently prescribed Wellbutrin for depression. She has never been any psychotropic meds before. I am concerned about the side effects, long term effects and whether she could start on a milder medication. It was prescribed after the very first session with a psychiatrist, even after I expressed concerns about medicaitons being the instant go to solution. Is Wellbutrin approved by the FDA and are their concerns from the medical community?
Hello. Wellbutrin (bupropion) is an antidepressant in the aminoketone class used for the management of major depression and seasonal affective disorder. Common side effects of Wellbutrin include:
agitation, dry mouth, insomnia, headache, nausea, vomiting, constipation, stomach pain, dizziness, ringing in the ears, vision problems or blurred vision, loss of interest in sex, sore throat, muscle pain, itching or skin rash, increased sweating, increased urination, tremor, changes in appetite, weight loss or gain, joint aches, strange taste in the mouth, diarrhea, and seizures (especially at higher doses).
But this occurs only on prolonged usage. For a short term of less than a year you need not worry. Regards- Dr Sanjay Kini
