What Are The Side Effects Of Risedronate?

Hello Doctor, for many years I have been taking Actonel for an osteoporosis condition, until three years when after a bone density test my doctor diagnosed an osteopenia; eventhough and trying to suffer any bone problems I keep taking Risedronate an generic of Actonel. I would like to know if there are contraindications (side effects) of Risedronate to keep on check?

Hi & Welcome.

Actonel (Risedronate) is a bisphosphonate commonly used effectively to treat or prevent osteoporosis in men and women.

Generally it is well tolerated however its major side effect is esophageal and gastric (stomach) irritation or esophageal ulcer hence contraindicated in patients suffering from acidity related stomach issues such as gastritis, reflux disease or peptic ulcer.

Other side effects include diarrhea, abdominal pain, and
osteonecrosis of the jaw.

This stomach or eosophagus related side effects however can be prevented by taking the medication with a glass of water and remain seated upright for 30 minutes. It can also prevented by using infusions of other equally effective bisphosphonates such as Pamidronate or Zoledronate. Intravenous infusion also allows a larger amount of drug to enter the body and markedly reduces the frequency of administration.

Hope I could answer your query.
A feedback is appreciated.
