What Are The Side Effects Of Nexium?

I have been taking Nexium for about 20 years or so.Recently I visited a holistic MD who suggested I stop taking this medication becauce of its side affects. My B12 count has always been low.Have not noticed any other major side affects. I have been of it for nearly 2weeks now and am experiencing severe discomfort with about every meal that I have. When condition becomes severe I take a Quick Eze which helps the condition temporarily.Do I have any other options to maybe consider?? Russell Chonka

Dear Sir, Hi & Welcome.
I can understand your concern.
Nexium (Esomeprazole) is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that blocks acid production in the stomach and is used to treat stomach and duodenal ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), etc.

The most common side effects of Nexium include headache, nausea, vomiting, & constipation which are mild in nature and well tolerated.
Although rare, but its long term use is associated with low serum Vitamin B12 levels, osteoporosis, increased risk of certain intestinal infections or pneumonia.
The low serum Vitamin B12 has no clinical relevance, it usually does not cause the typical signs and symptoms of vitamin B12 because of enough dietary intake and its storage in the liver.
You may either continue taking Nexium as prescribed by your doctor or other alternative effective but safer medications include H2 receptor blockers like Ranitidine or Famotidine which are equally effective in suppressing the acid production in the stomach and thus useful in your case. Other option would be the use of Antacids.
Besides, you also need to have certain lifestyle changes to improve your symptoms like:

1.Quitting smoking & alcohol consumption (if you are doing so!)
2.Losing weight if you are obese
3. Eating smaller meals and reducing the fat intake
4. Avoiding foods that can trigger symptoms like citrus fruits, caffeinated and carbonated beverages, spicy foods, fried and fatty foods, garlic and onions, tomatoes and tomato products.
5. Elevating the head end of your bed while sleeping
6. Going to be after 2-3 hrs of having the dinner, etc.

Hope the suggestions given above would be useful.
Regards.
