What Are The Side Effects Of Mirena Coil Contraception?

I originally had the copper coil as a method of emergency contraception and had to have it removed after it started causing me to bleed continuously for over three months. Following this I had the Mirena coil on recommendation from my doctor. Since having the Mirena coil fitted I have had spotting to fairly heavy bleeding on occasion combined with pretty severe stomach cramps but not frequently enough for me to feel I needed to see a doctor about. In the last couple of weeks I have noticed a difference in the length of the [coil] string that I can feel and have been experiencing cramps, headaches, fever, nausea, diarrhoea, dizziness, feeling faint and lack of balance, decreased appetite, and extreme fatigue. I can’t help but feel these symptoms could be in some way related to the coil, as in if it has moved out of place or has an infection surrounding it. Please could you advise?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
I understand your concern.
* Minera is intrauterine device with inbuilt hormone. One of it's side effect s irregular bleeding , sometimes severe bleeding( which usually gets spontaneously corrected within 3 months time after insertion.
The prolonged bleeding you had might be because of the abortion process.
* Minera can be displaced to cause serious complications . BUT in your case as the string being in place suggests the minera possibly is in place.
- Still it is better to get abdominal sonography done & confirm position of Minera.
- In case it is in place, your problems are pertaining to bowel infection. It needs antibiotics/anti diarrheals/water& electrolyte replacement s as per your doctor's advise.
The frequency of motions & cramps in bowels can lead to a bit of sagging down of Minera.-which should come to normal position after recovery.
Thanks.
