What Are The Side Effects Of Metformin?

I just started taking metformin about a week ago. I was having really bad diarrhea for awhile. But today I started getting sharp pains in my stomach and when I went to the bathroom my stools were bloody. Bright red. The toilet paper was bloody when I wiped also. Can metformin cause bloody stools or should I go to the Dr?

Hello,
Thanks for posting your query on HCM.
Gastrointestinal side effects mainly diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal pain are common with metformin.
A bloody diarrhea is not mentioned as a side effect of metformin. It may occur if you have been straining much when you pass the stools. However I would advise you to see a doctor preferably a gastroenterologist and exclude any other cause as some of them require urgent attention and care.
You are welcome to ask if you have any other query.
Take Care
