What Are The Side Effects Of Doxycycline And Flagyl?

I have been taking Doxycycline (sp?) for a flare up of diverticulitis, along with Flagyl. Between the two meds, I am having lots of side effects, and had to discontinue both meds and re-visit my doctor. She doesn t know another antibiotic to use since I m allergic to Levaquin, Cipro, and numerous other meds. She recommends going to a gastroenterologist, and I plan to make an appointment to see him. In the meantime, what can I do? Will eating pro-biotic yogurt or taking Acidipholus help?

Hi
Thank you for asking HCM.
I have gone through your query. Doxycycline and metronidazole (flagyl) can destroy the normal flora of large intestine along with the infection causing bacteria. But antibiotics can't be avoided in case of serious infections. So you can continue with that and take probiotics which will help. You can take saccharomyces boulardi or bifidobacter for this. Taking yogurt or curd is helpful also. Metronidazole also can cause dizziness or nausea. If you have nausea then you can ask your doctor for antiemetics. If you having any other side effects like skin reaction then approach your doctor for stopping the drug. What other undesirable effects you experienced?
Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.

You have not mentioned what kind of side effects you are facing. Medicines have a little effect on diverticulitis. Antibiotics are used to control infections which have a minimum role. You may try analgesic with proton pump blocker for some relief. But the main thing is to control your diet habit. In flare up conditions you should take liquid diet, ice creams to keep your bowel rest. Then you take fiber riched diet which prevent further attack. Probiotics have not proven much role in diverticulitis.
