What Are The Side Effects Of Clindamycin And Mupirocin?

HI there!
I got attacked by ants recently (not red ants, little black ones-I live in southern New Mexico) but apparently I'm allergic or sensitive to them and have several on my stomach which are small, red and slightly painful if touched, also a nasty looking one on my arm and a horrible one on my bikini line. The one on my bikini area is really bad; super painful, very swollen & red, and actually getting very dark in color around the swollen area, which is a very hard lump. She was convinced it was filliculitus, however, I got ant bites in October when I was in Texas on my butt (ugh!) and they looked exactly the same. They were so bad, that when i finally went to the doctor they gave me Augmentin. But I went to urgent care yesterday and they gave me clindamycin and also mupirocin. The nurse practitioner told me to take the antibiotic, wait 20 minutes, then put a warm compress on that area and then the mupirocin. But after the second time of putting the warm compress it "opened". It actually feels a little better since that, since all the puss is coming out (yuck-I know!) but my question, after all this info, is can I still put the mupirocin on that wound since it is open now. I know she had said not to poke it and cause it to open, but I can't remember if she said don't put the ointment on it if it does open; but I didn't poke it, it just did it on it's own, after the compress, which is another reason I'm almost sure that it's an ant bite, because I get ingrown hairs all the time (quite a few times a year), and they not only don't look like this, but they don't "pop" no matter if my clothes or undies rub against it. (sorry, i know that's alot of info....lol), but if you could let me know if I should still be using the ointment. I'm not a big fan of pills or medicine of any kind, unless absolutely necessary, so I don't want to do anything that would cause problems, especially because I'm leaving for a trip to California in a few days to see my boyfriend, and I would hate to spend what little time we have at the doctor. Thanks!

Hello,
Welcome to helthcaremagic.com and thanks for sharing your concern with us.
Mupirocin is for external use mainly . If you don't have any kidney problem then you can keep applying mupirocin for prescribed period with oral antibiotics on open wound also .Mupirocin ointments contain polyethylene glycol and which is absorbed from open wounds and is excreted from kidney that is why in kidney problems caution is needed.
Possible side effect of mupirocin are:
1. itching
2. dry skin
3. rashes
4. contact dermatitis
Possible side effects of clindamycin:
1. heart burn
2. nausea
3. vomiting
4.rash
5. joint pain
6. vaginal itching and discharge
Your Healthcare providers have prescribed you these medicines because the benefit is surely greater than the chances of any side effect so you should follow the treatment as prescribed.
Best Regards,
Dr.S.Tomar
