What Are The Side Effects Of Clarithromycin Tablets?

I have taken 500mg of clarithromycin X2 over 2 days for the treatment of acute bronchitis with 5 more days to complete the course. I have read the possible side effects and the normal dosage being 250mg per day. I have experienced quite a severe bad taste in my mouth since commencing this. Will not augmentin ( for which I do not have any noticeable side effects) do the same thing? Can I change to Augmentin at 250mg per day for the remaining 5 days?

Hi
Thanks for choosing HCM for your query.
I appreciate your concern for the safety of Clarithromycin.

Following are the important side effects of Clarithromycin:
Abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and altered taste sensation.

Normal dosage in the treatment of acute bronchitis depends upon the bacteria responsible for the infection caused by them:

Due to H influenzae: 500 mg orally every 12 hours for 7 to 14 days
Due to M catarrhalis or S pneumoniae: 250 mg orally every 12 hours for 7 to 14 days

Augmentine is usually not associated with bad taste like Clarithromycin.

Now since you have already taken the antibiotic for 2 days so it is not advisable for you to change the antibiotic.

Take plenty of oral fluids, juice or peppermint to overcome the bad taste which is self limited.

Hope your query is being answered.
