What Are The Side Effects Of Boniva?

Hi, I was very recently diagnosed with osteopenia and osteoporosis. My doctor wants me to take Boniva. I am very hesitant about taking this medication after reading about all of the significant side effects. He says it is safe for me to take it. What are your opinions?

Brief Answer:
You need to have some precautions while using Bonviva.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for using HCM.
Bonviva is a fundamental treatment in patient suffering from osteoporosis, used to inhibit the resorption of the bones. Your doctor has advised it to you , taking in consideration your osteoporosis grade (by osteodensitometry DEXA), your age, the risk to have spontaneus fractures, other diseases you may suffer, and your symptoms. Keeping in mind all the above he finds it safe for you to use. Eventhough, you need to take some precautions.
As Bonviva is taken with empty stomach (at least 6 hours after you last had anything) to be able for absorption, you should not suffer from certain problems with your gullet/food pipe (oesophagus) such as narrowing or difficulty swallowing in way to receive it without problems. You should stand or sit upright for at least one hour (60 minutes) at a time you take it. If you take it with intravenous administration (IV) this can be avoided.
So if you experience chest pain; difficulty or pain when swallowing; pain or burning under the ribs or in the back; new or worsening heartburn, you should get medical help.
Other common side effects may be :headache, muscle cramps, stiffness of your joints and limbs flu-like symptoms, including fever, shaking and shivering, feeling of discomfort, bone pain and aching muscles and joints, bladder pain, bloody or cloudy urine. Talk to your doctor if any effects become troublesome or last more than a couple of days.
A side effect called osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) (bone damage in the jaw) has been reported very rarely. If you experience any problems with your mouth or teeth such as loose teeth, pain or swelling, or non-healing of sores or discharge, as these could be signs of osteonecrosis of the jaw.
Be aware , that your blood calcium levels while taking Bonviva should be normal, so you should eat a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D and/or take tablets with supplements of calcium and vitamin D by mouth.
Get medical help immediately if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

Hope this is helpful.
